| The Alaska Caribou, Scientific name: Rangifer tarandus, inhabit the Arctic Tundra and Boreal Forest regions of Northern Alaska. Caribou are exceptional in that they are the only member of the Family of Deer ( Cervidae ) in which both males and females grow antlers which are shed annually. The male Caribou, called the Bull Caribou, antlers are much larger and heavier in the beam than those of the female or Cow Caribou. Average adult Bull Caribou attain a weight of about 400 pounds. Adult Cow Caribou average about 200 pounds or half the weight of the bull. Caribou are herd animals and the herds spend the summers in relatively high country where it is cooler and there are fewer flying insects to pester them. In early September the antler covering, or "velvet", is shed from the adult Bull Caribou antlers and indicates the coming breeding season, or "Rut". At this time of year the Bull Caribou antlers appear bright red because of the fresh blood-smear left on the antlers from under the shedding "velvet." Bull Caribou shed their antlers in late October or November after the "Rut" is over. Cow Caribou shed their antlers from April to late May just before the calving season. The Calves are born in late May or early June and there is usually one calf per Cow. Calves spend their summers with the Cow and are weaned prior to the Fall Rut. Caribou are both Grazers ( foraging on grasses ), and Browsers ( foraging on woody shrubs ) for their food supply. Caribou migrate as a herd up to fifty miles in a single day because of changing food supply and seasonal weather changes. The natural predators of the Caribou are Wolves and Grizzly Bears, and are most vulnerable during calving. Caribou are second only to Moose in popularity as a species of Alaska Big-game to be hunted. |
